Award Season is kicking off this weekend in The GPS area with the arrival of The Palm Springs International Film Festival. The week-long event begins tomorrow at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Filmmakers from more than 60 countries show their masterpieces at the annual Palm Springs International Film Festival and jockey for accolades such as Best International Screenplay, Best Documentary, and the teen-judged Young Cineastes Award. Screenings happen at multiple cinemas and often include celebrity appearances and Q&As.

The festival will open with the red carpet premiere of 80 For Brady, with stars Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Rita Moreno and Lily Tomlin scheduled to attend. The first night of the festival will also feature the awards ceremony which will honor stars like Colin Farrell, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Austin Butler and more.

Brendan Fraser will be honored with the Spotlight Award, Actor for his performance in director Darren Aronofsky’s drama, The Whale.

Past recipients of the Spotlight Award, Actor include Bryan Cranston for Trumbo and Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge, both of whom went on to receive Academy Award nominations for Best Actor.
